Operational monitoring has also been deployed to assess the status of those water bodies which are not currently at risk, but could be at risk of deterioration. The majority of Scottish water bodies are not at risk of failing to meet good status standards. However, some may still be at risk of deterioration (e.g. from high to good status), so are being monitored under the operational monitoring network. These water bodies were grouped together, based on geographical proximity and being of a similar typology. Once grouped, approximately 20% of the water bodies were selected for monitoring; the group will be classified using data extrapolated from the monitored sites.</SITE_METHOD>

SEPA has undertaken an extensive programme of drilling new boreholes; this is ongoing and the network is expected to be complete by 2009. Monitoring has also been undertaken where surface water interactions are significant.
