The sub-programme "nutrients in the seawater column" is carried out to monitor the levels of nutrients in transitional, coastal and off-shore water. The Polish sector of the Baltic Sea comprises 2 big bays with the outlets of big rivers - Vistula in the Gulf of Gdansk and Oder in the Pomeranian Bay. Vistula is the 2nd biggest river in the Baltic Sea and Oder is the 8th. The agricultural use of land in the territory of Poland takes up over 40% of all the Baltic Sea states and the population reaches nearly 40 000 000, hence the contribution of the nutrient load from Poland to the Baltic Sea is considerable. The Polish marine areas cover also 2 relatively deep areas - the Bornholm Deep and the Gdansk Deep which are liable to severe oxygen deficiency and azoic conditions. The temporal frequency of sampling differs regarding oxygen and macrophytes. Oxygen is sampled as nutrients: at monthly intervals in transitional and coastal waters and bi-monthly in off-shore area and macrophytes are sampled once a year. Reporting formats of EEA and ICES

The sub-programme “Riverine discharge” is carried out to monitor waterborne inputs to the sea. It is a part of national monitoring programme of the environment. Monitoring is carried out in 2 big rivers (Vistula and Oder), rivers discharging water directly into coastal and transitional (ie. marine) waters, as well as transboundary transport. River-based discharge of pollutants is a significant pressure on the marine Polish waters. river – transboundary rivers; sub-region
